Hype Energy’s third season with Sahara Force India has been a memorable one. 4th place secured in the Constructors’ Championship for the second time in a row - with two races to spare. A new driver line-up pairing the experienced and mighty fast Sergio Perez with the youth and raw talent of Esteban Ocon. And of course, a sexy pink livery. Let’s take a look at their record breaking 2017 season…

Positively Pink

Before the season even kicked off last March, Force India had already stolen the show when they revealed a sleek, new livery design. Bold. Brave. Unique. And very pink.

From Penelope Pitstop to Jigglypuff, endless comparisons surfaced across social media but one in particular stuck. The Pink Panthers. And one record breaking season later, Force India proved they truly were the panthers of the grid.

Like a Broken Record

Not satisfied with their 173 points haul from 2016, Force India continued their relentless march up the grid not only by securing 4th place with two races to spare, they did it with their highest ever points total for a season with187.The record-breaking performance for the team is even more impressive considering they have one of the smallest budgets across the sport. In the wise words of Sky Sport’s F1 commentator Martin Brundle, "for pounds spent in F1, [Force India] are world champions”.

27

Since breaking into the Formula One scene at the end of the 2016 season with Manor Racing, Esteban Ocon achieved an impeccable record of 27 consecutive race finishes since he joined the grid. Not counting the only DNF of his career in Brazil, Esteban scored points in all but one of the GPs he finished throughout the year. Although still a rookie compared to the rest of the grid, his impressive form has already earned him the nickname “Oconsistency” in just his first full season.

We don’t doubt we’ve only seen the beginning of what Ocon can do. But incase you forgot, take a look at these reactions…

Hype-lights of 2017

Spa Contact

It’s no secret Force India has a feisty pair of drivers, and we saw it in all its beauty during the Belgian GP this year when the two drivers got a little too close for comfort coming out of the 1st corner hairpin. We all know what happened next, but in case you missed it, you can start biting your nails here.

Italy P3 Grid Start

After an epic and rain-drenched qualifying where he secured P5, Esteban started the Italian GP in an incredible third place after taking advantage of his rivals’ grid penalties. He brought a little pink to the second row of the grid and stormed home in 6th place with eight well-earned points. Perez also had a great race and brought the points total into the double figures with a measured and impressive ninth place finish.

Spain P4 P5

Force India reminded the rest of the grid what they’re capable of in Spain this year as they walked away from Barcelona with a massive 22 point haul. P4 for Perez and P5 for Ocon remained the best finish for the team throughout the season, and proved that they’re the best of the rest as they continue to close the gap to the top 3 teams.

“Well let us know then!”

Whilst overtaking the Torro Rosso of Carlos Sainz in Malaysia round the outside, Ocon took a hefty shunt and was left facing the wrong way round the twisty and tight turn one. His radio engineer Brad Joyce had something to say about it…

Perez reception in Mexico

It’s always an incredible experience for an F1 driver to drive at their home circuit, but amplified by the epic stadium section at the Hermanos Rodríguez circuit, for Sergio Perez it was almost as if he had won the race. Absorbing the phenomenal atmosphere surrounded by one of the best grandstands on the calendar, the Mexican fans made it very clear who their hero is…

2017 Force India Hype Energy Driver Reviews

Sergio Perez

Best Result: P4 (Spain)

Having already established himself up and down the pitlane, Sergio Perez has a reputation for a mixture of speed and experience. A veteran of 135 Gran Prix and a familiar face in the paddock for nearly 7 years, 2017 was a chance to prove himself against the youth of his new team mate.

Although he probably didn't expect his rookie team mate to find his form so fast, Perez kept a cool head throughout the season and delivered points at 17 out of 20 races this year, including just missing out on a podium position in Spain with a P4. Throughout the season, he consistently demonstrated his single lap pace as he came out on top of the qualifying battle 12-7 against his team mate.

As Force India continue their relentless march up the grid towards the top teams, Checo’s experience and race craft will be invaluable to the team as they develop and master their car. The rivalry is brilliant to see between the drivers and fruitful for the team as they push each other and the car to new limits, and Sergio’s wise head and masterful car control have been an absolute pleasure to watch all season.

Signed and contracted for 2018, there’s even more to come for the Mexican veteran and we can’t wait for next season to get underway!

Watch his awesome double overtake at the beginning of the Shanghai GP!

Esteban Ocon

Best Result: P5 (Spain, Mexico)

2017 represented Esteban Ocon’s first full season as an F1 driver, and he didn’t waste time letting us know he meant business. Scoring points in his first 5 races - including a P5 in Spain - he set the tone for the season and provided ample points for the team.

After a difficult weekend in Monaco, the young Frenchman went on to finish in the points at every single race of the season. Well, until the Brazilian GP that is, when a mistake from another driver knocked him out of the race and cost him the first DNF of his career - ending an immaculate 27 consecutive race streak.

Image12

Not deterred by his rookie status, Ocon took the fight to his team mate at every race of the year and finished only a handful of points behind the experienced Mexican at the end of the season. A humble Perez told France's Auto Hebdo; “Even with a difficult car, Esteban still manages to go fast. That's one of his strengths and I have to learn from that…”

This was just his first full season, and the edge of our seats are already starting to show signs of wear. At this rate, we’re definitely going to need new furniture for 2018…

Top 5 Plotographs

If a picture can say a thousand words, then a plotograph is the dictionary of digital imagery. Hype Energy’s in-house design team has created these unique and rather hypnotic F1 plotographs to share our love for Formula One - with an added Twist.
